GIF to MP4

Upload an animated GIF and convert it to MP4, typically producing a file 5-10x smaller than the original GIF. The tool encodes the video with H.264 and ensures the output has even dimensions (required by most players) and a yuv420p pixel format for maximum compatibility.

GIFs are an inefficient format for video content — they use lossless per-frame compression without inter-frame prediction. Converting to MP4 dramatically reduces file size while maintaining visual quality, making it ideal for sharing on platforms that support video, embedding in websites, or reducing bandwidth usage.

Everything runs in your browser using ffmpeg.wasm — your file is never uploaded to a server.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the MP4 so much smaller than the GIF?

GIF uses lossless per-frame compression without inter-frame prediction — each frame is stored independently. MP4 (H.264) uses sophisticated inter-frame compression that only stores the differences between frames, which is dramatically more efficient for video content.

Will the MP4 look the same as the GIF?

Very close. The tool uses CRF 23, which is a high-quality setting. You may notice very slight differences on close inspection, but for practical purposes the output is visually identical.

Can I convert the MP4 back to GIF?

Yes — use the MP4 to GIF tool for that. Note that the round-trip will increase file size significantly because GIF is inherently less efficient than MP4.
