The Paper Room

Protect PDF

Upload a PDF and set a password that will be required to open it. The tool uses pdf-lib's built-in encryption to apply both a user password (required to open the document) and matching owner password, with restricted permissions — printing is limited to low resolution, and copying, modifying, and annotating are disabled.

This is standard PDF password protection as defined in the PDF specification — the same kind of encryption Adobe Acrobat and other PDF tools apply. Any compliant PDF reader will enforce the password prompt on open.

Keep your password in a safe place. If you lose it, there is no way to recover access to the protected file — you would need the original unprotected version.

Frequently asked questions

How strong is the encryption?

pdf-lib applies standard PDF encryption as defined in the PDF specification. The actual security depends heavily on your password strength — a short or common password can be brute-forced. Use a long, unique password for sensitive documents.

Can I remove the password later?

Yes, if you know the password. Open the protected PDF in any PDF reader, enter the password, and re-save or re-export it without protection. You can also use the Unlock PDF tool on this site if the PDF has only owner-level restrictions.

Does this upload my PDF to a server?

No. The encryption happens entirely in your browser. Your file and password never leave your device.

What permissions are restricted?

Printing is limited to low resolution, and copying text, modifying the document, annotating, filling forms, and document assembly are all disabled. Content accessibility is left enabled for screen readers.
