Profile Picture Cropper

Upload a photo and crop it into a perfect circle or square, sized for use as a profile picture on social media, messaging apps, or websites. Choose between a circular crop (the standard for most social platforms) or a square crop, and set the output size — 256px is a good default for most platforms, but you can go smaller for thumbnails or larger for high-resolution displays.

The tool center-crops the image to a 1:1 aspect ratio, then clips it to a circle if selected. For circular crops, the area outside the circle is transparent (the output is a PNG with an alpha channel). This means the circular shape is preserved when you upload it to platforms that don't apply their own circular mask.

Everything runs in your browser — the image is never uploaded to a server.

Frequently asked questions

What size should I use for social media profile pictures?

Most platforms recommend at least 400x400 pixels, but display the image much smaller. 256px is fine for most uses. Instagram recommends 320x320, Twitter/X uses 400x400, and LinkedIn suggests 400x400. When in doubt, go larger — platforms will downscale automatically.

How does the circular crop work with transparency?

The circular crop creates a PNG with a transparent alpha channel outside the circle. This means the file will show a checkered background in image viewers but will display correctly (with transparency) on websites and in apps. JPG doesn't support transparency, so circular crops are always output as PNG.

Can I adjust which part of the image is centered?

Currently the tool crops from the center of the image. For best results, position your subject in the center of the photo before uploading, or use a general crop tool first to frame the area you want, then use this tool to make it circular/square.
