The Paper Room

Favicon Generator

Upload any image — a logo, icon, or photo — and generate favicons in all the sizes modern browsers and platforms expect: 16x16, 32x32, 48x48, 64x64, 128x128, and 256x256 pixels. Each size is previewed at its actual dimensions so you can verify legibility at small scales.

Favicons are the small icons that appear in browser tabs, bookmarks, and history lists. Different browsers and operating systems use different sizes — 16x16 and 32x32 are the most common for browser tabs, while larger sizes (128x128, 256x256) are used for bookmark thumbnails and app shortcuts. This tool generates all of them in one step.

Download individual sizes or grab all of them as a single ZIP file. Everything runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded to a server.

Frequently asked questions

What image should I use as the source?

Start with a square image at least 256x256 pixels. Simple logos and icons with bold shapes work best — fine text and detailed photos become unreadable at 16x16. If your source isn't square, it will be stretched to fit each favicon size.

What sizes do I actually need?

At minimum, include 16x16 (browser tab icon) and 32x32 (retina tabs, bookmarks). For broader compatibility, also include 48x48 (Windows site shortcuts), 128x128 and 256x256 (Chrome Web Store, large bookmark thumbnails). This tool generates all of them so you're covered.

How do I add a favicon to my website?

Place the favicon file(s) in your website's root directory and add a <link> tag in the <head> of your HTML: <link rel="icon" type="image/png" sizes="32x32" href="/favicon-32x32.png">. Repeat for each size. Many modern browsers also look for /favicon.ico in the root automatically.

Why PNG instead of ICO format?

PNG favicons are supported by all modern browsers and are simpler to generate and manage. The legacy ICO format (which bundles multiple sizes into one file) is only needed for very old browsers like IE10 and earlier. For most websites today, PNG favicons are the standard.
